Impact Space Hosts Youth Boost: Girl Child Edition In Freetown, Sierra Leone!

Freetown, Sierra Leone – Oct. 17, 2025 – Impact Space successfully hosted a community health empowerment drive dubbed Youth Boost: Girl Child Edition at the Freetown Teachers College Hall, Main Campus, Jui, in commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child 2025.

The event brought together over 100 participants including students and teachers from 10 secondary schools across Freetown for a full day of empowerment through education, health services, leadership training, and enterprise development. Fully funded by Impact Space Inc., the program was designed to nurture the confidence, potential, and leadership of adolescent girls while engaging boys as allies in advancing gender equality.

Participants benefited from free medical screening, menstrual hygiene and reproductive health education, leadership and career guidance, entrepreneurship sessions, and a spoken word competition where three winners received certificates and cash prizes. All participants received health and educational kits to support their continued development.

The health screening results revealed pressing health concerns:

  • 42 individuals tested positive for malaria
  • 15 had low blood sugar
  • 5 had low hemoglobin levels
  • Only 18 were fully healthy

These findings underscored the urgent need for continuous school-based health education and interventions.

Facilitators included Sister Judith Kamara, Senior Nursing Officer at Princess Christian Maternity Hospital; Miss Sarah M. Kamara, National Coordinator of the Hult Prize Sierra Leone; and a dedicated team of Impact Space Volunteers: Joy Martha Vandi, Randolph A.D. Sesay, Alimamy Koroma, Racheal L.V. Vandi, Zainab Saffa, Justin J.S. Slyvah, Augusta Blessing Valcarcel, Octavius Sillah, Princess J. Kamara, and Amara Alpha Vandi.

Throughout the day, participants engaged in lively discussions and hands-on sessions that built awareness, motivation, and a shared commitment to personal and community development. The event focused on mentorship, teamwork, and empowering young people to become active agents of positive change in their schools and communities.

Team Lead Joy Martha Vandi shared her reflection:

“Youth Boost: Girl Child Edition was more than an event—it was a movement of hope and empowerment. We saw girls discovering their voices, boys embracing equality, and teachers supporting the next generation of leaders. The health findings remind us that education must go hand-in-hand with well-being. I am deeply proud of our volunteers and grateful to Impact Space Inc. and Director Irene Nyarko for their unwavering support and leadership. This is how we build lasting impact—one child, one community at a time.”

Recommendations emerging from the program include:

  • Expanding the Care Drive to rural districts
  • Conducting follow-up mentorship and health monitoring sessions
  • Establishing school and university chapters
  • Organizing radio discussions to continue awareness on youth empowerment and health

Impact Space Sierra Leone extends heartfelt appreciation to Impact Space Inc., Director Irene Nyarko, facilitators, volunteers, participating schools, and all the students whose enthusiasm and engagement made this event a success.
